The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is now in the Business of Medicine: Who Knew They Were So Capable?

Thank you FAA, HIMS National, www.himsprogram.com, AMAS, Dr. Berry, Dr. Scott, et al., but...

…and, if you didn't know, the FAA has its OWN MEDICAL MODEL,

COMPLETE WITH ITS OWN DEFINITIONS, AND DIAGNOSTIC CRITERIA. WHO

KNEW THE FAA WAS SO CAPABLE? WHAT DOES THE MEDICAL COMMUNITY

KNOW ANYHOW? APPARENTLY NOTHING THE FAA IS CONCERNED WITH...

PERHAPS THEY'RE INCREASING THEIR PATIENT BASE, AND...

PROGRAM FOR A REASON? <-----------[click here]

HOW ABOUT THE FAA'S COMPLETE DISREGARD OF DSM-5? ACCORDING TO

THE FAA, MOST EVERYONE WHO DRINKS REGULARLY IS "SUBSTANCE

DEPENDENT." PILOTS, PAY ATTENTION, AND TAKE HEED NOT TO REVEAL

YOUR ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION TO THE FAA AND/OR YOUR AME. ENSURE

YOU RECEIVE QUALITY MEDICAL ADVICE/TREATMENT FOR ANY SUBSTANCE

DEPENDENT RELATED PROBLEM YOU MAY BE HAVING; JUST NOT FROM THE

FAA and/or HIMS RELATED RESOURCES.

("Substance Dependence" as per the FAA):

And FINALLY, the 'non-HIMS and/or FAA related' TRUTH about "alcoholism..."

DSM-5 Criteria for Substance Use Disorder

Perhaps the FAA (and affiliated physicians, et al.) should familiarize themselves with the DSM-5 criteria for Substance Use Disorder. In case they were curious, they are nearly identical to a combination of the criteria for the diagnoses in the DSM-4 TR of Substance Abuse and Substance Dependence.

Review printable fact sheets with the DSM-4 criteria: FAA (and affiliated physicians, et al.) **Please Note** A new version of the DSM, DSM-5 was released in May 2013, which did away with the separate diagnoses of substance "dependence" and substance "abuse" and replaced them with a single diagnosis, substance "use disorder" based on nearly the same criteria combined. A minimum of 2-3 criteria is required for a mild substance use disorder diagnosis, while 4-5 is moderate, and 6-7 is severe (APA, 2013). The other major change was to remove the criterion related to legal problems and to add one related to substance craving.
